Troop 895

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where does the troop meet?
A:  We meet on Mondays at Waterview Church of Christ which is located at 1409 N. Waterview Dr. Richardson, TX. 75080

Q: What time do you meet?
A:  We meet from 7:00PM - 8:30PM. It is a Boy-Led troop so it may last a little past 8:30PM.

Q: Do Scouts need to go out and buy all new camping equipment for my son?
A:  It is not necessary to go and buy it all at once. The troop has some tents and other equipment they can use. We also have a Clothes Closet.

Q: What is a Clothes Closet?
A:  We have an area where we store the uniforms that older Scouts have out grown. These Scouts donate them to the troop.

Q: What do Scouts do if they want a pair of trousers from the Clothes Closet?
A:  You get with the Adult Leader in charge of this and pay the troop $5.00. If your son is donating a smaller size he can exchange it for his size and not pay $5.00.

Q: Do Scouts need to wear their Class A's when going camping?
A:  A Scout MUST ALWAYS wear his Class A's going to and coming from a campout. He also needs to wear it to every Monday night meeting.

Q: Is it ok for Scouts to wear flip-flops or slippers to the Monday night meetings?
A:  No! Class A's include green socks, closed toe shoes, BSA belt, BSA green shorts and BSA khaki shirt. It also includes the proper patches on the shirt.

Q: Does the original Medical forms get turned into the Medical Chair?
A:  It is best to turn in copies and keep the originals

Q: My son likes to take one of his electronic games when we travel. Is this fine to do on campouts?
A:  Sorry, No electronics are allowed.

Q: How about a cell phone in case of an emergency. Is it alright a Scout takes his?
A:  He does not need to take his cell phone. All the adults have theirs. If there is an emergency one of the adults will call you.

Q: Why does the troop need to have a Medical form Class 1, 2 or 3 forms on file?
A:  We need to know if a Scout is allergic to anything. Most importantly is knowing he does not have any limitations from participating in Scouting.

Q: When can a Scout start earning Merit Badges?
A:  Every Scout needs to make it to First Class before he starts focusing on the Merit Badges.

Q: What's a "Blue Card"?
A:  When your son is a First Class he will go to the Advancement Chair and let him know he wants to start a certain Merit Badge. The adult in charge will give him a BLUE CARD. This must be signed and approved by the Scoutmaster BEFORE he starts the merit badge.

Q: What does a Scout do after he has it signed by the Scoutmaster?
A:  Now he needs to call or email the counselor that was assigned to him. He needs to read the Merit Badge book BEFORE he meets with his counselor. He needs the counselor's approval BEFORE he begins his work.

Q: Do Scouts need to purchase their own Merit Badge books?
A:  The troop has a library of Merit Badges that any Scout could check out and return upon completion. Some Scouts like to have their own. If this is the case, you can purchase one at any Boy Scout store.

Q: Where are the Scout stores?
A:  Collin County Scout Shop 816 West Mc Dermott Twin Creek Village, Suite 336 Allen, TX 75013 214-495-0306 Fax: 214-495-0316 The Scout Shop 8605 Harry Hines Blvd. Dallas, TX 75235 Phone: (214)902-2001 FAX: (214) 902-2016 Sherman Scoutfitter 202 Sam Rayburn Hwy. Q: The merit badge is finished, now what?
A:  When the merit badge is finished. The Blue Card gets turned in to the Advancement Chair. The Advancement Chair will add this to the Scout's record. At the next Court of Honor, there are three in a year, he will receive it.

Q: The Court of Honor came and went but the Scout did not receive the Merit Badge.
A:  As efficient as the Advancement Chair is, sometimes something will slip by. This is also why the Blue Card comes in three sections. One for the Scout's records, one for the counselor's and one for the Advancement Chair. All the Scout needs to do is speak with the Advancement Chair. It will be handled immediately.

Q: Why do Scouts receive their advancement badges immediately and not their Merit Badges?
A:  It is important for the Scouts to get recognized immediately. Advancements can take several months to a year to complete.

Q: What happens when Scouts get too busy to make all the campouts?
A:  It is important for the Scouts to stay in Scouting, so they should attend the campouts and meetings they can attend.
