After thousands of training miles and hundreds of racing miles, J.J. Pearce senior Megan Siebert decided to just keep going. On Tuesday morning at a ceremony filled with proud coaches, admiring friends and excited family, Megan signed her national letter of intent to run for the University of Texas Longhorns.
The Mustang senior has been the school's top distance and cross country specialist since she stepped on campus three years ago. Three trips to the state cross country finals and two all-state placements highlight her resume. Megan's cross country and track success are all the more remarkable considering that she was also a three year basketball letterman. Her talent attracted interest from a bevy of schools that she eventually narrowed down to Texas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State. While each school offered strong programs, Megan had long wanted to be a 'Horn and Tuesday she turned her dreams into reality.

If you have been hearing hoof beats, it is not your imagination. Instead, the sound comes from Head Coach Steve Anthony’s young and talented J.J. Pearce track and field squad.Saturday’s Newman Smith Trojan Relays at Carrollton’s Standridge Stadium served as the season’s kickoff.A close look at the results reveals the Mustangs have much to look forward to in and around the oval this year.
The Newman Smith meet is one of the city’s largest, featuring traditional track powerhouses from nineteen 5A and strong 4A programs so points at the meet are hard won.As an example, last year Pearce had one performance that placed in the top 6 for the combined varsity and junior varsity events. This Saturday the Mustangs enjoyed 15 finishes that earned the distinction. The squad enjoyed this dramatic improvement without the benefit of the heavy lifters in the throwing events, most of who were competing in a power-lifting meet.
The headline performances came from two of Pearce’s established stars, sophomore Cory Coleman for the men and senior Megan Siebert for the women.Cory picked up where he left off in last season’s regional finals, high jumping to a 6’2” mark good for second overall.Megan blazed to an 11:30 two mile time that shattered her personal best in the event by 30 seconds, also good for a second place spot just behind 5A state finalist Jessica Harper from Southlake Carroll. While it is still early in the season, both performances serve notice that Cory and Megan will be looking for state meet berths come May.Sophomore distance specialist Kendall Howen was almost as good as Siebert, posting two fifth place finishes in stacked fields of the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters with personal bests of her own.Jared Floyd leapt to a 6th place spot in the varsity long jump with an effort at 20’ 3”.
But the biggest surprise for longtime Pearce fans might come from the sprints.Freshman Kedron Banks and juniors Floyd and Evan Carter all posted 100 meter times well under the twelve second mark. These early season times would have placed all three into last year’s district 10-4A final, an event that was empty of Ponies when it was last run. That trio teamed with another freshman, Jay Hunter, to run a respectable 44.80 in the 4 x 100 meter relay. An exchange problem disqualified the quartet in the 4 X 200 but for the first time in a long time, Pearce appears poised to seriously compete in the speed events. On the women’s side, the Mustangs were not quite as deep but Ciara Banks was the third quickest freshman in the meet at 100 meters, clocking in at 13.49 seconds. Junior Anna Gerber was hot on Ciara’s heels with a 13.58 mark.
Standout performance in the junior varsity group included Chaz Kile winning the pole vault; Sean Thiedeman placing secondin the 110 meter hurdles and fourth in the long jump; Anthony Revels taking third in the high jump; Sydney Robertson scoring a fourth in the 100 hurdles and sixth in the 300 hurdles; Adam Wiest running to 5th in the 400 meters; Kyle Breshers with a fifth in the 110 hurdles and Katie O’Brien triple jumping into 6th place.
The hurdles look like a strength again for the Mustangs.Robertson and Lane raced in the junior varsity section but their times would be competitive at the varsity level, particularly in the shorter event.Freshman Cullen Martin ran well in the varsity 300.When Coach Anthony retrieves Nick Ucherek from the soccer team and gets back last year’s regional qualifier, Casey Lane, from his basketball and baseball exploits, he will have an embarrassment of riches.
Next week’s meet takes the Ponies to Frisco for a varsity only competition where the young squad will look to build on their initial success.
