The Mustang running game finally got untracked this week, but it wasn’t enough as the Pearce JV fell to Irving Nimitz 34-21 Thursday evening in Irving.
The Vikings drew first blood on a 1st quarter drive that ended with an 8 yard touchdown run.The conversion failed, leaving Nimitz with an early 6-0 advantage.
The Mustangs answered in the 2nd quarter on a 69 yard drive featuring tough running by Charlie Barnett and Kedron Banks. It was Banks who provided the big play when he turned on the jets for a 50 yard touchdown run at the 4:46 mark.Dylan De La Garza’s kick was good and Pearce took what would be its only lead of the night 7-6.
The Vikings quickly responded with a deep ball that went for a TD.The two point conversion run was good for a 14-7 Nimitz lead.It went from bad to worse when the Mustangs fumbled the ensuing kickoff return. The Vikings recovered in Pearce territory and immediately completed another long pass down to the Mustang 3 yard line. The Vikings ran it in from there and were successful on another two point conversion to increase their advantage to 22-7.
Despite there being only :43 remaining in the half, the scoring was far from done.Anthony Revels fielded the Viking kickoff and took it the distance for an 80 yard touchdown.De La Garza’s kick closed the gap to 22-14.
After returning the Pearce kickoff to its own 38 yard line, with only :14 remaining, the Viking offense struck again on a 62 yard bomb.Aaron Moss stuffed the Viking’s 2 point conversion attempt, leaving the score 28-14 at halftime.
Pearce received the kick to open the 2nd half and utilized strong runs by Banks and Barnett and an 18 yard pass from Brian Noland (who got the start for an injured Rhett Svetgoff) to Luke Buckner to push the ball down to the Viking 2 yard line. From there, newcomer Bryant Wallace took it in for the score.De La Garza nailed the point after to make it a one score game at 28-21.
The Pearce D got the stop it needed on the ensuing possession (with key tackles contributed by Luke Carlton and Zach Pink), forcing a Viking punt. The offense began driving again behind key runs from Barnett & Banks, along with a pass from Noland to Cullen Martin for a first down. But the drive ended on a fumbled snap recovered by Nimitz at the Pearce 48.
From there, the Vikings cranked up their running game and scored at the 9:53 mark in the 4th quarter for the final margin of 34-21.
Once again, special teams were a bright spot for the Mustangs with Revels’ 80 yard return and a 42 yard return by Banks.De La Garza was 3 for 3 in PATs and got good distance on his kickoffs.

The Pearce Mustangs Junior Varsity opened their season Thursday night against the Lake Dallas JV at Pearce “B” Field, falling to the Falcons 26-6.
After a scoreless 1st quarter, the Falcons took advantage of a Pearce fumble at the Mustang 36 yard line and scored on a QB sneak five plays later to take a 7-0 lead just before halftime.
After trading possessions for most of the 3rd quarter, the Falcons struck again late on a long pass play to take a 13-0 lead. Kedron Banks fielded the ensuing kickoff and returned it a short distance and appeared to be going out of bounds when he reversed direction and circled back to the middle of the field and broke a 70 yard return to the Falcon 20 yard line.Despite the momentum, the Mustang offense was unable to capitalize and was stopped at the 1 yard line on 4th and goal.
After the Mustangs lost another fumble in their own territory, Lake Dallas struck again in the 4th quarter on another long pass to extend their lead to 19-0. Kickoff returns were one of the bright spots for the Mustangs, with Anthony Revels breaking a 46 yard return to set up the offense with good field position again on the Falcon 39 yard line. On the next play, the Mustang cashed in with Rhett Svetgoff hitting receiver Luke Buckner in stride for a 39 yard TD, Pearce’s lone score of the night. The 2 point conversion attempt fell incomplete, leaving the score 19-6.Lake Dallas added a late touchdown to make the final margin 26-6. The Mustang offense moved the ball well for most of the night, with Svetgoff completing passes to seven different Mustangs, but had trouble sustaining drives, until the 4th quarter touchdown pass.
The Pearce defense stopped the Falcons several times, forcing 5 punts, but was susceptible to giving up big plays. The Mustangs turned the ball over twice, both on fumbles, which led to half of Lake Dallas’ points. The Falcons had no turnovers on the night.
The Junior Varsity will look to even their record at 1-1 next Thursday, September 2nd at Irving Nimitz.
