Second Summer Car Wash a success!

The J.J. Pearce High School Choral program is rich in a tradition of excellence and quality in musical performance and experience. The success of the choral program is centered on students who are committed to excellence, and that excellence has earned the Pearce A Cappella choir the highest choral honor, the 2008 State Honor Choir.
These students will prepare a special concert of music and travel to San Antonio to present their concert to the Texas Music Educators Conference in February of 2008. So it is an exciting year for the Pearce Choral Department.  Student’s willingness to establish short and long-term goals for improvement in vocal technique and music reading are rewarded.   The program offers many opportunities for our students, daily voice training, choral contests, social events, music theory, vocal performance, and camaraderie with friends while making music.
The J. J. Pearce Choral Department Handbook for 2007-2008 gives specifics about the program and RISD music guidelines.  We invite you to keep up to date with our program and music on this web site.  Keep singing!

We are delighted to announce that the Pearce Mum store will once again be sharing the profits of the Homecoming mum effort with organizations such as choir.  It is so easy for you to come and enjoy a few hourse of fellowship and ribbon cutting- make money for the choir and the PTA in one easy sitting.  Last year choir was the group awarded the most hours (profit) and it helped our organization greatly.

So, come and spend a few hours a week.  You won't be sorry.  We have two BIG choir work days where we want everyone to help.  They are Thursday June 26 between the hours of 5-9PM and Wednesday July 2 between 10AM-3PM.  Just come when you can and stay as long as you can.  Sign in on the choir work detail.  The beginning work is mostly cutting and is very easy to do.

We will miss these 22 graduates who have meant so much to the choir program. Good Luck!

The annual choir banquet was held at the Crown Plaza hotel on May  21, 200.  The food was good, the company was supurb and the skits were hilarious.  Seniors were honored with a framed Pearce letter and awards were given.  We reveiwed the year in skits, slides, and song.

Thanks to Lori Thiedeman and Susie Shnider for organizing the banquet.

A Word to our Graduates
Dana Gioia Commencement Address
June 23, 2008
SeniorLetters.jpg

Following is the final portion of a prepared text of the speech delivered by Dana Gioia, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, at Commencement exercises at Stanford  on June 17, 2007.

Distinguished graduates, your support system is about to end. And you now face the choice of whether you want to be a passive consumer or an active citizen. Do you want to watch the world on a screen or live in it so meaningfully that you change it? That's no easy task, so don't forget what the arts provide. Art is an irreplaceable way of understanding and expressing the world—equal to but distinct from scientific and conceptual methods. Art addresses us in the fullness of our being—simultaneously speaking to our intellect, emotions, intuition, imagination, memory, and physical senses. There are some truths about life that can be expressed only as stories, or songs, or images.

Art delights, instructs, consoles. It educates our emotions. And it remembers. As Robert Frost once said about poetry, "It is a way of remembering that which it would impoverish us to forget." Art awakens, enlarges, refines, and restores our humanity. You don't outgrow art. The same work can mean something different at each stage of your life. A good book changes as you change. My own art is poetry, though my current daily life sometimes makes me forget that. So let me end my remarks with a short poem appropriate to the occasion.

[PRAISE TO THE RITUALS THAT CELEBRATE CHANGE]
Praise to the rituals that celebrate change,
old robes worn for new beginnings,
solemn protocol where the mutable soul,
surrounded by ancient experience, grows
young in the imagination's white dress.
Because it is not the rituals we honor
but our trust in what they signify, these rites
that honor us as witnesses—whether to watch
lovers swear loyalty in a careless world
or a newborn washed with water and oil.
So praise to innocence—impulsive and evergreen—
and let the old be touched by youth's
wayward astonishment at learning something new,
and dream of a future so fitting and so just
that our desire will bring it into being.

September 13, 2007
CG5A5.png

This year the Pearce Choir as well as other RISD music classes are using a system called CHARMS for communications and official student information.  Below is the log-in instruction sheet that was passed out in class.

Parents, make sure your contact information is correct as the CHARMS system takes the place of the old system of registration cards. This information is private, controlled by a password, and controlled by the directors.  We have the link listed on our "Links" page as well.
