Lady Mustang Volleyball celebrate raising $5400 for Breast Cancer
The Richardson Pearce Volleyball Program hosted its annual DigPink Night on Tuesday and the evening started with the gym and people covered in pink and ended with Pearce sweeping Newman Smith. Although Pearce is enjoying another outstanding year on the court, what took place prior to the match is what made the evening so magical. Each Varsity player, coach and manager honored an individual who has been impacted by breast cancer with a pink rose. A giant check was then presented to Mic Zednick, daughter of long-time and beloved theater director at Pearce, Lynn Shaw, who passed away recently when she lost her battle to cancer. Just in case there were a few dry eyes in the audience, former Pearce student and future Broadway star Elizabeth Judd came back from New York to sing the national anthem which brought the house down. Elizabeth's mom works at Pearce and is currently going through treatment for breast cancer. The match was very entertaining, especially after each set when a Pearce student handed out free pink smoothies to our most spirited fans. "I have been involved at Pearce and the sport of volleyball for many many years and last night will go down as the one I am most proud of because our community came together beautifully for such a great cause", commented Pearce Athletic Booster Club President and Volleyball Team Rep Paul Olschwanger. Over $5400 was raised from this event and will go directly to the Side-Out Foundation.
Friday Night, the Lady Mustangs swept Rockwall and will host R.L. Turner on Tuesday Night as we honor our four Seniors on Senior Night. Pearce (35-5, 11-0) is currently ranked #1 in the state and #11 in the country.

Siebert, Howen Pace Cross Country
September 28, 2009
Alyson Sommerfelt running strong for the Mustangs
Five meets into the cross-country season and the Pearce Mustangs keep repeating the same verse. On the women’s side they can count on senior Meagan Siebert and sophomore Kendall Howen for high finishes with a team placement. For the men, sophomore Taylor Piske shows promise but not enough to make a dent in the formidable line-ups present in District 10-4A.It was more of the same at the Jim Baker Invitational in Rowlett this weekend. For the third time in five meets, Siebert and Howen finished first and second, this time in a 4A and under division. Those finishes led the women’s team to fourth place overall even without their number three runner, Dani Austin.Celia Beron,Stephanie Santamaria and Allison Arnold completed the scoring for the Lady Mustangs, with Audrey Henderson providing support in the sixth spot.Unfortunately, district rivals Rockwall and Rockwall-Heath finished first and second overall in the team standings. On the men’s side the swine flu was the winner keeping enough runners out so that Pearce was unable to field a full varsity squad.Piske fought of the effects of his own illness to finish tenth in an 18:36 time over the tough five-kilometer course. With some improvement between now and the October 31 district meet Piske could be competitive for a regional qualifying berth. Drew Cotton posted a 20:03 time and Jacob York crossed the line at 21:42.

Mustang gridders defeat te Eagles 43-21
September 22, 2009

Willie Martin bocked 2 punts, one for a safety in the 43-21 win over RHS
It was time again for the Ponies to renew their annual battle with the boys from just down Mimosa Rd.The 2-0 Eagles were purported to be new and improved, but the game turned intoan all too familiar rendition of the same song verse 11, as the Mustangs turned a 14 all halftime knot into a 43-21 convincer. Trailing 7-0 in the first quarter the Mustangs answered with a 77 yard Caleb Lewis (18-22-289) to Josh Gold (7-catches for 57 yards) bomb.Michael Hunnicutt kicked the first of five extra points. In the 2nd quarter Gold tallied again, this time on a run from the four. The Eagles put together a drive to even the score. The Ponies pushed the ball back across mid field to set up s 57 yard field goal attempt.Hunnicutt’s kick had enough leg for sixty plus yards but sailed just wide right. In the second half the Mustangs dominated every aspect of the game. The Pearce secondary¸ Brooks Vehslage, Miles Wheeler, Connor O’Reilly, and Connor Wenning, threw a blanket over the Eagle receivers and punished the Richardson backs.Up front Dylan Byrd, Wade Caston, Willie Martin, and Dylan Anderson never allowed the Eagles to get untracked.Three times the Pony punt block team got the better on the Eagles.Junior Willie Martin blocked back to back punts, the second for a safety, to turn the momentum of the game.Michael Hunnicutt continues to frustrate kick returners by driving his kickoffs out of the end zone. The Mustang offense, famous for its high-flying passing game, demonstrated that it can grind it out on the ground with the best of them.Particularly the right side of the offensive line, center Sean Grove, guard Cameron Burlingame, and tackle Chase Fuerst opened the way for Josh Gold and super sophomore Corey Coleman in a run fest.Gold scored twice more and rushed for 104.Coleman added 40 yards and a TD.Mac Morse hit Jett Robertson for a six yard touchdown to close the scoring. For the Mustangs, the season really begins with the district 10 4A schedule. The R.L. Turner Lions lie just ahead.
Cross-Country Runs Thru the Flu
Lady Mustangs finish 1-2 at LHHS
September 22, 2009
Megan Siebert and Kendall Howen finish 1-2 at the LHHS Invitational
Coach Michael Siebert knew he would have some on the job training when he took over the Pearce Cross Country program two years ago.But he probably was not thinking medical school would be a necessity. This season’s flu outbreak combined with a variety of other ailments has the Coach juggling lineups and deciding whether practice or rest is best for his runners.Fortunately, Pearce’s two brightest stars remained in good form for last Saturday’s Lake Highlands Invitational. On a muggy morning attacking a hilly and wet course, senior Megan Siebert and sophomore Kendall Howen ran away from the field of over 100 runners to finish first and second. The team missed its number three and four runners (Dani Austin and Celia Beron) but still fielded a competitive squad, ending seventh out of the twenty-two teams at the race.Stephanie Santamaria stepped up to place third on the squad. An ailing Allison Arnold turned in a gutty performance to hold down the fourth spot while Audrey Henderson contributed nicely from the fifth position.Leslie Deramus, a 400 meter track standout, made her cross country debut at number six. From the junior varsity group sophomore Alyson Sommerfelt had her best effort of the season. While the day’s results did not produce any team trophies, the Pearce runners got a bird’s eye view of most of their district competition.Teams from Rockwall, Rockwall Heath, Carrollton R.L. Turner and Carrollton Newman Smith all attended. At first glance the fact that the two Rockwall teams finished ahead of the Mustangs, in third and fourth, is worrisome.Inserting Austin and Beron back into the lineup, however, would likely have brought Pearce into a dead heat with their rivals from Lake Ray Hubbard.Assuming Coach Siebert can put his best group on the field for district his girls stand a puncher’s chance to land a regional qualifying spot.It may take a little more than medical magic for the boy’s to get to the same spot. Two of the medically missing this weekend wwere lead runner Taylor Piske and senior James Zhang.Given the nature of cross-country scoring, when a team misses its number one runner it replaces his score with the score of its usual number six runner.Only an exceptionally deep team can survive that scenario. Saturday Pearce was not up to the task finishing well back in the standings.Next weekend finds Coach Siebert’s group in Rowlett for the Jim Baker classic. He hopes to have them all healthy but if you catch sight of runners in facemasks this week you will know that the epidemic is not quite over.
Mustang Cross-Country "Fun in the Mud!"
Runners shine on a messy course
September 13, 2009
Sophmore Taylor Piske runs in the mud at the recent UTA Meet.
For the Pearce cross country team, Saturday was a day to make lemons out of lemonade. Starting with a 5:45 a.m. report to the bus in the middle of a torrential downpour and without three of their four captains, this year’s UTA Gerald Richey Meet in Arlington had all the earmarks of an event best forgotten by the Mustangs. Instead, a group of resourceful runners used the slippery course to mark some rapid improvement. For the men, sophomore Taylor Piske returned from last week’s soccer absence and posted a 17:56 time in his first 5,000 meter race. Given the adverse conditions, Taylor’s time means he will almost certainly be competitive for a regional qualifying spot out of the very tough District 10-4A. Larkin Mao debuted his season in the men’s junior varsity race, speeding his way to a 20:24 finish. His head turning performance lines him up for varsity competition in the immediate future. But the biggest news came from the entire team. Every other male runner from senior captain Drew Cotten to freshman Ryan Marx improved his time over last week’s disappointing performance at the Marcus I Invitational. While course-to-course comparisons are difficult the quicker finish times over a muddy track, in the middle of a substantial rain, breathed new life into a men’s team that looked to be struggling. The Lady Mustangs were without star Megan Siebert and seniors Allison Arnold and Anne Hightower who were all enjoying college entrance exams. Sophomore Kendall Howen led the team in their absence, getting to the line in third place for the combined 5A/4A division. Junior Dani Austin was twenty-third overall. Celia Beron, Stephanie Santamaria and Audrey Henderson completed the scoring for the varsity squad.Austin's twenty–third place does not sound too significant but it means much for the women. Cross country teams score five runners in each meet. With Siebert and Howen likely to finish near the top of most races, the fate of the team hangs on the runners in the three through five positions. This axiom is particularly true in a district where Highland Park, Rockwall and Rockwall-Heath almost always field deep squads. Austin’s recent emergence coupled with steady contributions from Beron has given Coach Seibert at least four runners who should be towards the front of the pack. The fifth score for the women could come from any number of runners: seniors Arnold, Hightower, or Stephanie Santamaria; an improving Audrey Henderson who has competed for the varsity squad the last two weeks; or junior varsity runners Alyson Sommerfelt, Grace Keliher and Sam Liscio.Coach Seibert’s squad has their sights set on next week’s Lake Highlands Invitational at Norbuck Park in Dallas. While the weather forecast has to be better than Saturday, it may be that the team’s prospects for success have improved even more.

Mustang Tennis Team is ranked #2 in State. Go Netsters!
With a bustling start to the fall team season, a welcomed break in the schedule gave the team a breather before district play begins and a chance to enjoy the initial state rankings. Once again, the strongest district in 4A tennis is in our own backyard with the top 2 teams from 10-4A. The Mustangs debut in the #2 spot just behind Highland Park.
In the only Varsity action for the week, the boy’s side took on RL Turner and easily handled the Lions winning all matches.
The JV however, had a busy schedule the last several weeks. In action 2 weeks ago, the JV beat Lake Highlands 10-9. In action last week, the JV rolled over RL Turner and played Richardson HS.
It will be another light schedule this week and then district action will resume Sept. 15, at Highland Park.

Lady Mustangs Win the Prestigious Pearland Tournament. 1st 4A school to win!
The theme for this year's Pearce Volleyball Team is Riding Fearless....From Start to Finish and so far there have been no signs of fear as the Mustangs have competed against the best 4A and 5A teams in the state with great success going 22-4 with wins over numerous state ranked teams. After finishing 3rd at the Duncanville Tournament and 5th at the Texas Open in Allen, the Mustangs traveled to Pearland for one of the most prestigious and largest tournaments in the country. It was a magical three days for our girls as they went 8-0, beating San Antonio Reagan, the state's #1 ranked 5A team in the finals to mark the first time a 4A team had won this event. As a result of their body of work, the Mustangs find themselves ranked #1 in the 4A TGCA state poll and at least #6 in the lonestarvolleyball.com all classification state poll. Up next is a very tough road match against 3A state champion Lovejoy this Tuesday night at 6:30. We then play our next four matches at home starting with Creekview this Friday, Richardson next Tuesday, our district home opener vs. Greenville on 9/11 and finally, the match or rematch that everyone has been waiting for on 9/15 vs. Highland Park. Mustangs Defeat Sachse 49-28
#15 Ranked Mustangs Dominate Both Sides of the Line
August 31, 2009

Jake Allen goes up for the TD pass from Caleb Lewis in 49-28 win over Sachse
Sachse game wrap-up courtesy of Pearcefootball.org:
J. J. Pearce vs. Sachse Thursday, August 27, 2009
Facing a favored Sachse team in the hostile environment of Garland Williams Stadium, the Pearce Mustangs christened the 2009 season, with an impressive 49 to 28 victory. Taking up right where they let off last December, the Mustangs opened the game with a 15 play, clcok-eating drive that culminated with Caleb Lewis 4 yard run. Behind the Wade Caston snaps and the Blake Jumonville holds, Michael Hunnicutt kicked the first of his seven extra points.
The Mustang defense pitched a first quarter shut out highlighted by Connor OReilly blocking Sachse's 12 yard field goal attempt. Pearce went up 14-0 in the second quarter on Josh Golds 1-yard TD plunge. After Sachse answered with a touchdown, the Ponies came right back with a 10 yard Mac Morse to Jake Allen scoring toss to lead 21-7 at the half.
Behind a senior offensive line led by Fred Barajas and Sean Grove, the second half was more of the same for the boys from Pearce. Caleb Lewis, who finished the day 19 of 27 for 237, threw third quarter touchdown passes of 46 yards to Josh Gold and 5 yards to Kevin Garvey. Gold got the hat trick with a 6 yard dash in the 4th quarter. Mac Morse threw to Jared Floyd for 30 yards and the game's final TD.
For the Mustang defense, the game introduced a new secondary featuring returning starter Connor O'Reilly, and newcommers Connor Wenning, David Tatum, Brooks Vehslage, and Miles Wheeler. The linebacker core is anchored by first-year MLB Mason Harris and outside linebackers Michael O'Brien, Bryce Henderson, and Cassius Clay. The Defensive front line is solid with returning starters Bardia Karimi, Dylan Byrd, Wade Caston, and newcommer Dylan Anderson. Defensively, the Mustangs held the Sachse Mustangs to 28 points, and DBs Connor OReilly and Miles Wheeler had interceptions.
The Mustangs host Denton-Ryan in their home opener this week.
