Narrow Trail Cowboy Church

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a "Cowboy church?"
A:  The cowboy has always stood for something unique in the American culture. Though the word has gotten a little muddled in today's political discussions, the truth is that to call a man a "cowboy" is to identify what he does for a living. But not everyone who maintains the "cowboy spirit" actually works with cattle or rides horses. To many folk, keeping the "cowboy spirit" is to honor a person for his hard work, skill, character, plain-spoken nature, and rock-solid commitment to a task or cause. Cowboys wear boots, jeans and Stetsons, to be sure, but they also wear business suits and ties as well. The same is true of Cowgirls. They can be found on horseback, in a classroom or boardroom, or astride a steel horse rolling down the highway. At Cowboy Church, we believe in keeping it simple. We're not much on fancy language or ceremony. We maintain a deep, personal relationship with Jesus, Christ, and we believe that we can worship Him anywhere, whether on horseback, in a building, or under the stars. To be honest, most "cowboys," whether a real ranch cowboy or a city dweller, have felt left out of traditional brick n' stained glass churches. They don't feel welcome in places where folks put a premium on dressing in their "Sunday best." And so, they quit attending. Cowboy Church was started to provide a place where a Cowboy can come on in and hear the word of God and feel like he or she is truly at home. Walk into Cowboy Church and you'll notice immediately that this is different. You might see western-style furniture or your pew might be a bale of hay. The preaching is honest and the message is simple. You’ll get a warm "Howdy!" and, most likely, a big hug to go with it. There's an informal “Come as you are,” down-to-earth, love-one-another type atmosphere. You're welcome at Cowboy Church no matter where you come from, what your background is, or even what you’re wearing. If you've got a little "cowboy" in your soul, then you'll find a home here. Saddle up and ride along with us. We believe that the experience will surely cinch up your faith on God’s word.

Q: Uh, isn't Love and War in Texas a honky tonk? Why do you meet there?
A:  We are seeking the Lord's "Lost and Strays" Love and War does have a bar and a Texas Music beer garden to complement its restaurant. And, yes, there are plenty of beer signs around. But as singer/songwriter Austin Cunningham has pointed out about our church, "there's a hundred beer signs and one cross, but one cross is all you need." Let's be a little more specific. Narrow Trail Cowboy Church is a mission church. We're reaching out to those within our culture who normally won't set foot in a church, except for weddings and funerals. In fact, we're reaching a hand out to folks that other churches typically turn away. In truth, we're reaching out to the "unchurched." The way we see it, if you're coming to Love and War on a Saturday night to hear a band play, maybe you'd feel comfortable showing up on Sunday, sitting in exactly the same spot, and, quite possibly, hearing the same performer sing gospel. If that brings more people to the Lord, then we're doing our job. Consequently, if you're sporting work boots, cowboy hats, blue jeans or even a serious hangover - you're our kind of folks!

Q: What kind of music do you have? Is it boring church music from hymnals by amateurs?
A:  BEST IN TEXAS! We have both kinds -- country and western. Seriously, our musical tastes reflect our Texan spirit. If you are a fan of Texas Music then you will know many who sing at our church regularly. We mix up traditional hymns done Texas style with original songs by the singer-songwriters that play for us. (We have even had Billy Joe Shaver, Matt Hillyer of 1100 Springs, Richey McDonald from Lonestar...and a hundred more) TEXAS MUSIC! Many people come to Love and War just to hear great Texas Country music. This community of singer and songwriters and their fans typically listen to FM 95.3 "The Range". The artists perform and have fans nationwide. The potential influence of Narrow Trail Cowboy Church is incredible!

Q: At Cowboy Church, will I hear any of this New Age type of preaching? Are you an "emergent" church? Will I hear "hell-fire"? Do I have to be a "Baptist" or whatever?
A:  Nope. No. Never. Not at all! Just because we reach the lost doesn't mean we have to compromise on the gospel. In fact, the gospel is the only thing that will clean up a person. Some just have further to go to get sanctified. That's alright, All of US did too, and ain't none of us perfect yet! But we are working that way one step at a time. We teach the gospel in a plain-spoken, straight-up manner. We believe God's Word has a power all its own. No amount of human advice can ever do what the Lord will do when we put His Word out there. Regardless of denominational background...We believe when we lift up Jesus Christ all men will be drawn to him, just like Jesus said. Lets agree on that and get to work together!
