History of the Wildcat Wrangler Country and Western Dance Team

The Wildcat Wrangler Couples Country Western Dance Team was established in the fall of 1992 by Katha Black, the first director, and Mark Pace, a Lake Highlands High School coach and former Texas A & M Aggie Wrangler.  Mark taught the choreography of spins, turns and acrobatic stunts while Katha, a degreed fine art dance specialist, taught the dancing.  The Wranglers have been directed by Cheyney Crook since 2004.

In order to be a member of the Wildcat Wranglers, students must have a passing grade point average and obtain excellent recommendations from their teachers.  Wranglers must audition in front of a panel of judges performing country western dance skills and stunts.  The panel of judges usually includes experts in ballroom dancing, cheerleading and drill team.  The team consists of 23 couples, all juniors and seniors at LHHS.  These are exceptional high school students – not only do they perform over 50 different events each school year, they are also full-time students involved in varsity sports, theater, choir, school musicals, honor societies, school clubs and volunteering for their community and churches.

Decked out in boots and cowboy hats, this country western swing/stunt dance team performs intricate routines, line dances and stunts. For large gatherings, the entire group of 23 couples performs, while smaller events involve groups of fewer couples.  The Wranglers welcome opportunities for audience participation as they teach easy-to-learn line dances and other C&W staples like the “Cotton-Eyed Joe”, the “Texas Two-Step” and “The Chicken Dance”.

Since inception, the Wranglers have danced in countless performances including community and volunteer service opportunities at local schools, churches, retirement centers, hospitals, charity events and private parties.  Performances of note include:
